When is the best time to install rolled turf?

Rolled turf can be installed from spring to late autumn, but each season has its own rules. Here is when a new lawn roots fastest.

When is the best time to install rolled turf?

In Estonia, rolled turf can be installed through practically the entire growing season, from May to October. But the speed of rooting and the amount of care differ noticeably by season.

Spring: late April to June

Spring is the best time for rolled turf. The soil is moist, temperatures are moderate and the lawn has time to root properly before the summer heat. Turf laid in spring needs less watering and is at full strength by summer.

Summer: possible, but demanding

You can lay turf in July and August, but watering becomes critical: for the first weeks the lawn needs water every day, twice a day in hot weather. Without automatic irrigation, summer installation is a gamble.

Autumn: September to mid-October

Early autumn is almost as good as spring. The soil is warm, there is more rainfall and less evaporation. The important thing is for the turf to root before steady night frosts arrive, which takes about three weeks.

The most underrated part of the job

Most failures come not from the wrong timing but from a poor base. Unlevelled, uncompacted or nutrient-poor soil means that even turf laid at the perfect time will struggle. Proper preparation is half the result.

If you are planning a new lawn, come and ask: we will look over your plot and tell you honestly whether turf or seeding makes more sense.
